A strong magnolia image gives you the branch as well as the bloom. The flowers are large, waxy and sculptural, but what makes the subject worth hanging is the contrast between those pale cups and the dark, awkward, half-bare wood they sit on. Weak examples crop in tight on petals alone and end up as a soft pink smudge that could be any flower at all. If you can see the angle of the branch and the tight furred buds that have not opened, you are looking at a good one.

Background is the second test. Magnolia blooms are pale, so they need something behind them to push against: a dark ground, a deep sky, or a shadowed depth of field. Set on white or very light grey, the petals lose their edges and the whole thing goes weightless, which is why so many magnolia prints look washed out on the wall despite seeming fine on screen.

The subject leans quiet and soft, and it is at home in a bedroom, a dressing area or a bathroom more than a hall or a home office. That is worth being honest about rather than fighting. Where it does work in a shared living space is as a single large piece with a dark background, which stops it reading as decorative filler.

Format depends on which part you keep. A single bloom sits comfortably in a square. A branch running across the frame needs a wide format to keep the diagonal intact, and cropping that diagonal is the fastest way to ruin the composition. Vertical formats suit an upward view into the tree, where you get sky between the flowers.

Check the colour of the white before you buy. Magnolia petals run from a green-tinged cream to a strong purple-pink at the base, and those two versions belong in different rooms. Hold the image against your bedding or curtain fabric; the pink one will either sing or stick out, and there is rarely a middle result.
