A lotus slows a room down, and that comes from something concrete in the picture rather than from anything mystical. The flower sits alone on still water, with a wide empty surface around it and no competing detail, so the eye is given somewhere to rest instead of something to scan. Few floral subjects are built that way. Roses and peonies fill the frame; a lotus is mostly space.
Which makes the empty area the part to judge. Strong examples keep the water calm, tonal and nearly featureless, with soft reflections and little else. Weak ones crowd the surface with pads, ripples and background foliage until the flower is one item among many, and the quiet quality that made you look in the first place disappears.
Rooms that suit it are the obvious ones plus one surprise. Bathrooms, bedrooms and a yoga or meditation corner all work. So does a home office, where a low-information image gives you somewhere restful to look between tasks. It works least well in a dining room, where the wall usually wants more energy than this subject has to offer.
Palette splits the category cleanly. Pink and white lotus images on pale water are gentle and go with almost any soft scheme. Ink and monochrome versions are graphic and architectural, sitting better with dark timber, black metal and modern furniture. Gold-accented versions are frankly decorative and want a plain wall to themselves.
Hang it lower than you would hang a landscape. The subject rewards being looked down into slightly, the way you would look at real water, so centre it at seated eye level in a room where people sit. In a bathroom that means level with someone in the bath, not with someone standing at the basin.
