Nobody stands close to a longhorn. It is a subject read at 3–5 metres — from the doorway, from the sofa, from the far side of a kitchen island — and almost every sensible decision about buying one follows from that. The horns are the content, and horns are a silhouette rather than a detail.
Horn span is therefore the first thing to get right. It needs to sit fully inside the image with air around it, because a crop that clips either tip turns an imposing animal into an awkward one, and that is the kind of thing you stop being able to unsee. Which also makes this a landscape subject in every sense: above a mantelpiece, a long sofa, a bed, or on a hallway wall seen end-on. A tall format fights the animal's own proportions and generally loses.
Colour in this category runs to dusty ochre, sepia, bleached bone and washed-out sky, sometimes with a near-monochrome treatment over the top. Those tones sit naturally with leather, iron, unfinished wood and warm plaster. They also work harder than you would expect in a cool modern grey room, where the warmth reads as deliberate contrast rather than accident — but only if the piece is large enough to look intentional.
Practical check: go and stand where you will actually see it, then look at the wall and think about what else lives at that height. Horn tips have an unlucky habit of ending up level with a light switch, a thermostat or the corner of a doorframe, and at the viewing distance this subject demands, that collision is the first thing your eye finds and the last thing it forgets.
