The common mistake is buying the view instead of the picture. There is a handful of vantage points that appear on every souvenir stand, shot from the same railing at the same hour, and hanging one at home tends to feel like a hotel corridor rather than a memory. The images that hold up have a point of view: weather doing something unusual, an odd angle on a familiar shape, a street that only reads as this city if you have stood in it.
Scale is the second trap. A dense cityscape carries hundreds of small events — windows, cranes, rooftops, boats — and shrinking it turns all of that into grey speckle. As a rough guide, a city panorama wants to span a good two thirds of the furniture beneath it. If the wall cannot take that, choose a tighter subject instead: one bridge, one facade, one lamp against fog.
Orientation follows the subject fairly strictly here. The river and the skyline are horizontal ideas and fight a tall frame; towers, spires and narrow terraced streets are vertical ones and look cramped in a wide one. Nobody notices when you get this right, and everybody feels it when you get it wrong.
Palette is easier than people expect. This is a grey and brick city for most of the year, so its imagery sits comfortably with muted walls, warm woods and blue-leaning schemes. Sunset shots are the exception: they introduce orange and pink that will fight a cool room, so check the strongest colour in the image against the strongest colour already in the space.
A useful test before buying: can you say what the picture is of in five words, without naming a landmark? If the answer is only the landmark, it may not be enough to live with. If you can say fog on a bridge at dawn, it probably is.
