The palette this subject brings is narrower than people expect: tawny gold, dust, dry grass, a darker mane running to chocolate, and a sky usually bleached towards white or dropped to black. That is a warm, earthy set, and it sits naturally against cream, camel, olive, chestnut leather and unpainted wood. It works much harder against cool grey-blue walls, where the gold turns slightly yellow and looks as though it belongs in a different house.
Monochrome versions solve that problem outright. Stripped of the tawny, a lion becomes texture and shape — mane, brow, the sheer weight of the head — and a black and white treatment will hang in a cool modern room, a monochrome hallway or an office where the colour version would jar. It also drops the mild safari-lodge association that colour photographs of this subject can carry.
Scale and presence need managing. This is a subject with a great deal of implied authority, and printed large facing the viewer it dominates a room whether you intended that or not. Fine above a fireplace or at the end of a long hallway, where you want something to arrive at. Less comfortable in a bedroom, or facing a dining table where people sit for an hour with it staring back at them.
Look at the mane and the whiskers when comparing images. A good original keeps individual hairs separated at the mane edge and holds the fine pale whiskers against the fur, while a weak one turns the mane into a soft orange mass. Eyes look sharp in nearly everything, so they tell you very little.
If the room is already warm and busy, consider a tight crop of the face on a dark ground rather than a whole animal in a landscape. It brings the same weight with far less colour to manage, and it will not compete with your rug.
