Light does more to a leopard image than to almost any other animal subject, because the whole picture is pattern. In strong daylight the rosettes read sharply and the coat looks golden and high in contrast; under warm evening lamps the same print goes amber and the spots soften back into the background, which is more or less what the animal's camouflage was built to do. A piece can genuinely look like two different pictures at either end of the day, which is worth knowing before you hang it opposite a big window.

Monochrome versions dodge that entirely. Stripped of the gold, the image becomes a study in shape and eye contact, holds its contrast in any light, and sits far more easily in a room that already has strong colour of its own. If your walls are anything other than neutral, black and white is usually the safer pick.

Face-on close-ups and full-body shots want different walls. A head-on portrait with direct eye contact is confrontational at close range — excellent at the end of a corridor where you meet it from a distance, uncomfortable at the head of a bed. A body in profile among foliage is a landscape image with an animal in it, and behaves like one.

Pattern pairing is the usual pitfall. Rosettes count as a print, so a leopard piece above a patterned rug, near patterned curtains or on a papered wall gives the eye three competing textures. Give it a plain ground and let it be the pattern in that part of the room.

The check to make is on the eyes and whiskers at full zoom. Wildlife images sharpened too hard show a pale halo around the whiskers and a glassy, over-bright catchlight in the eye. Clean whiskers against a naturally soft background are the sign of a good original.
