It is reasonable to ask why an enormous photograph works on a wall when a poster the same size would look like advertising. The answer is depth. A photograph carries real perspective — a horizon, a receding street, air between things — and at scale it behaves less like an object on the wall and more like an opening in it. That is the trick of the category, and it is also the rule for choosing well: the images that enlarge best are the ones with somewhere for the eye to go.

Busy images break the spell. A dense street scene or a cluttered composition at two metres wide gives the eye fifty things at once, and in a modest room it reads as noise. Simple structures — a coastline, a mountain, a single subject in weather — hold together at any size, which is why so much large-format photography is landscape.

Size to the wall and the furniture, not to nerve. Above a sofa or bed, around two-thirds of the furniture's width is the reliable proportion; on an open wall, leave more margin than instinct suggests, because a large image with no breathing room feels wedged in rather than generous.

Distance is the quiet requirement. A very large photograph wants to be seen from a few metres back to resolve into itself, so the best homes are rooms where you naturally sit or stand well away: across a living room, up a stairwell, facing a dining table. In a narrow room you will only ever see it in pieces.

Judge candidates at thumbnail size before buying. A composition that reads clearly at postage-stamp scale will read clearly at two metres; one that needs zooming to understand will need explaining on the wall, too.
