Almost everything in this category is words, and that single fact governs the rest. A typographic piece is read rather than looked at, which means letterforms, weight, line breaks and the space around them are the composition — there is no other subject to fall back on. A phrase that lands well in a sentence can feel thin when it is half a metre wide on plaster, and a clumsy line break will bother you every time you walk past it.

Read any candidate aloud, exactly as it breaks on the page. If a line ends on a small word, or the emphasis falls in the wrong place because of where the designer split it, the piece will read awkwardly forever. This is the commonest flaw in word-based art and the easiest to catch before buying.

Typeface tells you where it belongs. Fine script reads as personal and suits a bedroom, a nursery or a quiet corner. A heavy sans or a condensed capital reads as public and works in a hallway, a kitchen or a shared workspace. Put the loud version in a bedroom and it starts to feel like an instruction rather than a sentiment.

The illustrated end of this category behaves differently. Hearts, hands, small figures and simple line drawings carry the same idea without announcing it in letters, and they survive daily viewing better because there is nothing to re-read. If you like the sentiment but suspect you will tire of the words, that is the version to buy.

Distance is the final check, and a quick one. Stand at the far end of the room. If the text is legible from there, it will dominate; if it dissolves into a shape, it will sit quietly and reveal itself as you approach. Neither is wrong, but decide which you want beforehand, because that choice cannot be fixed by shifting the piece a few inches.
