Wall Art for a Kids’ Bathroom

A children’s bathroom is a small, humid, brightly lit room with almost no free wall, and it is one of the few places art is genuinely useful rather than decorative — a distraction during teeth-brushing has practical value that art in a hallway does not.

Humidity is the first constraint. Anything hung in a bathroom should be away from the direct splash zone and ideally on the wall furthest from the shower, and the room should be ventilated after use. That is ordinary bathroom sense rather than a special requirement, but it rules out the wall immediately beside the bath.

Space is the second. Bathroom walls are broken up by mirrors, cabinets, towel rails and tiling, so the usable rectangle is usually small and often oddly proportioned. A single small-to-medium piece almost always works better than an attempt at a gallery wall, and above the toilet or beside the door tends to be the only genuinely free spot.

On subject, this is the room where humour earns its place. Sea creatures, bath-time scenes, ducks, whales, gentle jokes about washing — things that would be too much in a living room are exactly right here, because the room is small, brief and low-stakes. It is also a good place for something that makes a reluctant six-year-old stand still for two minutes.

Keep the palette lighter rather than darker. Small rooms with limited natural light close in quickly, and pale artwork helps rather than hinders.

Let them choose. This is a small, low-stakes wall in a room they use twice a day, and it is a genuinely good place to let a child pick something themselves.
