Jellyfish Wall Art: Room by Room

Bathrooms, stairwells, dim hallways and bedrooms are where this subject belongs. Almost every jellyfish image is a pale, translucent, glowing form on a very dark ground, which amounts to a light source in a frame — it does its best work where the surrounding light is low and the picture can glow rather than compete. The room it usually fails in is a bright white kitchen in full daylight, where the black background stops reading as depth and starts reading as a dark rectangle.

Colour range is narrower than it first appears. Most of the palette is blue-black, teal and violet, with a bloom of white or amber at the bell. That is a cool scheme, so it steadies rooms with a lot of warm wood and it can chill a space that is already grey and north-facing. Where the room runs cold, look for a version with amber or pink in the tentacles to warm it back up.

Shape argues for upright formats. A jellyfish trails, and the tentacles are half the picture, so a tall crop keeps that drift intact while a wide one tends to reduce it to a floating blob. Tall also suits the places these prints work best: the narrow wall beside a bath, the run above a stair, a strip between two doors.

Glare deserves a thought, because dark images show reflections that pale ones hide. A picture hung directly opposite a window or a bright ceiling light will mirror it straight back at you, and the darker the image, the worse it looks. Hang it on the same wall as the window, or on a return wall, and the problem largely goes away.

For a good example, look hard at the bell edge. In a strong image you can see through the body to the water behind it, with a fine ruffled rim and tentacles that stay separate rather than merging into a smear. Translucency is the entire subject; if you cannot see through the animal, you are looking at a white shape underwater.
