What dates fastest in this category is anything that borrows from a decade's restaurant styling. Heavy sepia washes, olive-oil-bottle-and-checked-cloth arrangements, the words BUON APPETITO in a script that was fashionable around 2010, and any composition with a fake vintage border. These looked contemporary once and now read as a specific and slightly tired moment. What lasts is closer to documentary: flour on a wooden board, hands working dough, a market stall of tomatoes, a plate photographed honestly under daylight. Ingredients age better than slogans.

Colour is the other durability question. This subject naturally supplies deep reds, basil greens, cream and the browns of crust and board, which is a warm and fairly forgiving palette. It works against white tile, wood and warm neutrals. It does not work well against cool blue-grey kitchens, where tomato red goes slightly synthetic. If your kitchen runs cool, favour the flour-and-dough end of the category over the sauce-and-tomato end.

Kitchens and dining rooms are the obvious placement, though there is a real difference between them. In a kitchen these can be busy and close-up, because you are moving past at short range. In a dining room they need to work from across a table, which means simpler compositions and larger elements — a single bowl rather than a spread of twelve dishes.

Sets of three or four along a run of wall suit this subject better than most, since the individual images are simple enough to repeat without becoming noise. Keep them to one visual family, though: three photographs, or three illustrations, not a mixture.

An honest caveat before committing. Food imagery is unusual in that it stops registering quickly — you look at it for a fortnight, then you stop, in a way that does not happen with landscape or portraiture. That argues for spending on one good piece for the wall you face while eating, rather than covering the whole kitchen. Test it by asking whether you would still look at it in a year.
