This subject needs size. Hip hop imagery is built from dense visual information — layered type, spray texture, cassette and turntable detail, crowds and skylines — and below a certain scale all of that compresses into grey mush. If the wall you have in mind is narrow, do not shrink a busy collage to fit; choose a single bold object or a piece of large lettering instead, and let it fill the space.

Because the genre borrows from posters and record sleeves, a lot of it is square by instinct. Square hangs well over a sideboard or a desk and badly on a tall, narrow wall, where it leaves awkward gaps above and below. Check the shape of your wall before you fall for a particular image, not afterwards.

Typography is where quality shows. Good pieces treat lettering as structure — weight, spacing and rhythm doing the work — while weak ones scatter words about to fill empty corners. Read every word in the image at full zoom. Anything you have to squint at on screen will be illegible from the sofa, and half-readable text is more irritating than none at all.

Colour usually runs monochrome with one hot accent, which makes these easy to place beside black frames, dark wood and concrete-toned walls. They fight with florals and soft pastels. If the room already has plenty going on, a black-and-white version of the same subject gives you the attitude without the argument.

Hang it lower than you think. Poster-derived art looks wrong floating high on a wall; it wants to sit close to furniture, the way a record sleeve sits in a rack. Line the bottom edge up with the top of a shelf or the back of a sofa and the whole thing suddenly looks like it belongs there.
