Graffiti art dates fastest when it leans on a reference — a slogan, a celebrity face, this year's catchphrase — and lasts longest when it is really about letterform, gesture and colour. Ten years on, the piece built from pure spray-can energy still works; the piece built around a topical joke explains itself like a dated tattoo.
Buy energy, then, rather than message. If a piece contains legible text, apply the daily-reading test: you will read those words every single day for years, involuntarily, every time you pass. A phrase that amuses you in a listing can wear thin by February.
Setting-wise this category earns its keep in home gyms, offices, teenagers' rooms and open loft spaces, and it does something particularly useful in very tidy interiors — a controlled room with one loud, chaotic canvas reads as confident, where the same room without it can read as sterile. The same logic serves rented flats well, where a single bold canvas does the personality work that paint is not allowed to do.
Colour needs light. Graffiti palettes lean on neon, chrome and saturated colour against dark grounds, all of which fire in a bright room and go murky in a dim one. If the intended wall is poorly lit, choose a piece with a light ground, or plan on lighting it properly.
The ageing test takes ten seconds: on screen, cover the central motif or the text with your hand and look at what is left. If the remaining composition — the colour, the movement, the layering — still interests you, the piece has foundations and will outlast its references. If covering the punchline kills it, you are buying a joke, and jokes on walls have a shelf life.
