The ginkgo leaf is a fan with a split down the middle and no central vein — fine parallel lines run out from the stem instead. That flat, almost drawn shape is why the subject reads so cleanly on a wall. Where most foliage dissolves into a green blur at a distance, ginkgo keeps its outline, and you can still tell one leaf from another from across the room.

That makes it one of the few botanical subjects that works close up and far away. Detailed studies reward inspection at arm's length; simplified or line-drawn versions hold their shape from the doorway. Either way you are looking at a repeating motif with a strong silhouette, which is also why it turns up so often in pairs and sets.

Colour is the second thing to plan around. The autumn yellow is intense and unusually uniform, since a whole tree turns at once, so images of it are large fields of a single saturated hue. That yellow is superb against grey, ink blue, charcoal and warm wood. It is much harder work beside terracotta, orange or red, where it goes slightly sour. Green summer versions are far more forgiving if your room already carries warm colour.

Format follows what is shown. A single branch or a few leaves suits a tall panel and a narrow wall. A canopy taken looking upwards wants width and a decent size, because that pattern needs room before it stops being pattern and turns into wallpaper.

If you are hanging two ginkgo pieces together, check the background tone matches before anything else. Yellow on cream and yellow on near-black are effectively two different colours, and side by side the mismatch is the only thing anyone will see. Same ground, same yellow, and the pair works as a pair.
