People buy geometric art the way they buy paint — matching the palette to the sofa — and that is the most common mistake in the category, because busyness, not colour, decides whether a piece calms a room or turns it noisy. Count the elements roughly before anything else. A composition with five large shapes behaves like a quiet block of colour; one with fifty small shapes behaves like pattern, with all the competing for attention that implies.
Match the energy to the room rather than the palette to the furniture. Minimal rooms can absorb intricate, high-energy geometry and are usually improved by it; rooms already full of books, plants and textiles want the simple few-shape pieces. Get that exchange backwards and no amount of careful colour matching will rescue the wall.
Size favours the brave here. Straight lines gain authority with length, and a large geometric canvas looks deliberate where a small one can look like a leftover from another room. Between two sizes, take the larger unless the wall is genuinely tight.
One quirk of the category deserves a warning: geometry is unforgiving of wonk. A slightly crooked landscape gets away with it; a slightly crooked grid of triangles is visible from the doorway. Hang with a spirit level, and glance around first — strong horizontals and verticals in the art will make a sloping shelf or an out-of-true door frame nearby more noticeable than it ever was before.
After hanging, do the squint test from the doorway: half-close your eyes and look. The piece should resolve into a few clear masses. If it stays a jumble, it is too busy for that particular room — move it somewhere larger and plainer before concluding you bought badly.
