Garden and Floral Landscape Wall Art

The difference between a strong garden image and a weak one is structure. A good one has a path, a hedge line, a gate or a run of planting that leads the eye somewhere, and a clear separation between foreground, middle and distance. A weak one is a wall of green with flowers scattered evenly through it, and from three paces away that becomes a mottled blur. Look for a line to follow and a place for the eye to stop.

Depth depends heavily on the light in the original scene. Overcast conditions give flat, even colour that loses form; low sun and open shade give shadow, and shadow is what tells you a border has depth. If everything in the frame is equally bright, it will read as a pattern rather than as a place you could walk into.

Season sets the temperature of the whole piece, so match it to the room rather than to your favourite month. Spring greens are sharp and slightly acidic and can jar against warm woods. Late summer borders bring dusty pink, mauve and bronze, which sit comfortably with brick, oak and unbleached linen. Winter gardens are mostly grey and structural, and they suit a cool, plain room that stronger colour would overwhelm.

Format usually wants to be wide. Gardens are horizontal things, and a landscape crop lets the eye travel across the planting, which is the pleasure of the subject. Uprights work when there is a genuine vertical in the scene: an arch, a tall hedge, a climbing rose against a wall, one good tree.

Check the darkest area of the image before buying. In garden pictures the shadows under shrubs carry a surprising amount of the detail, and if those shadows are already crushed to solid black on screen, they will read as holes on your wall. A careful example keeps a little information down there, and noticing that is often the quickest way to sort the good from the ordinary.
