Fruit is one of the few subjects people genuinely look at from close range, because it usually ends up in a kitchen or a dining room, and in both of those rooms people stand still within a pace or two of the wall while they wait for a kettle or clear a table. That changes what you should buy: detail you would never notice above a sofa is exactly what earns its keep here.
Surface texture separates the good from the forgettable. Citrus peel with visible pitting, the bloom on a plum, condensation on a grape, the dull matte skin of a fig against the wet gleam of its cut half — these are the things that hold up under a close stare. A smooth, evenly lit apple with no texture at all is wallpaper.
Colour needs a check against your kitchen, not against your taste. Fruit brings strong, unmixed hues — lemon yellow, tomato red, lime green — and a kitchen already has plenty of colour in it from tiles, worktops and whatever is on the shelves. In a busy kitchen, a single fruit on a dark ground calms things down. In a plain white one, a full arrangement gives the room something to do.
Height matters more here than in most rooms, since kitchen walls are broken up by cupboards, splashbacks and sockets. The usable strip is often narrow, and hanging into it means centring on the gap rather than on the wall. Measure the actual free space between units before you fall for something with a shape that will not fit it.
Keep it away from the hob and the sink if you can. Cooking grease travels further than people expect, and steam plus daily splashes is a poor environment for anything you want to keep looking clean. The far wall of a dining area, or the run beside a table, gives you the close viewing without the airborne fat.
