What dates fastest in this category is the joke. Cartoon frogs with speech bubbles, novelty poses, internet-humour versions and anything built on a slogan will feel pinned to a particular year within a couple of years, and you will notice the moment it stops being funny. What lasts is the animal treated as an animal: a tree frog on a wet leaf, a study of the eye, a pond-life illustration in the manner of an old natural history plate. Those older-style plates hold up because they were solving a real problem, which was showing a creature clearly, rather than chasing a look. Plain ground, accurate anatomy, careful colour, plenty of air. That formula has outlived two centuries of changing taste.

Colour is the practical decision. Frogs bring intense greens, and a few species bring reds, blues and yellows that read as almost artificial. One vivid frog against a pale ground makes a strong accent for a bathroom, cloakroom or child's room. Several vivid ones together start to look like a chart, which is fine if a chart is what you want and jarring if it is not.

Scale runs smaller than you might assume. These are small creatures, and blowing one up to the size of a person is a deliberate effect rather than a neutral choice — entertaining in a downstairs loo, unnerving over a bed. A modest piece at close viewing distance suits the subject better, because you are meant to lean in and look at skin, damp and detail.

One thing to check on any close-up: the eye. A frog's eye is effectively the whole picture, and if it is soft, blown out or oddly reflective, nothing else in the image rescues it. Open the largest preview available and look there first, before you look at anything else.
