The useful question with sport prints is what hangs next to them, because they rarely hang alone.

A stadium under floodlights sits well beside black-and-white architectural shots, map prints and typographic pieces — anything graphic and unsentimental. It fights with florals, soft landscapes and anything pastel, which end up looking as though they wandered into the wrong room.

Mixing eras within a set is where people come unstuck. Grainy monochrome terrace scenes and saturated modern action shots do not sit together comfortably; the tonal gap is too wide. Pick a lane — all vintage, all contemporary, all illustrated — and a group of three or four immediately looks curated rather than accumulated.

Colour needs a little discipline too. Strong team colours in a print will drive the palette of the whole wall whether you intended that or not, and two competing colour schemes in one room is a headache nobody needs. If the space already has a defined palette, an image built on green pitch, grey concrete and white floodlight is the safer buy. Save the loud colours for a room that is genuinely yours to shout in.

Aerial and geometric compositions are the quiet winners here: a pitch from directly above, the repeated arcs of a stand, the pattern of empty seats before kick-off. They read as graphic design first and sport second, which is why they survive in a living room where a crowd celebration would not.

One placement tip. Hang these at standing eye level rather than seated height, since the rooms they end up in — hallways, offices, garages, home gyms — are rooms people move through rather than sit in. And if you are building a group, keep the gaps tight, a hand's width between pieces, so the wall reads as one block rather than scattered fragments.
