People end up standing very close to this subject. Flamingos have a habit of landing in cloakrooms, hallways, bathrooms and the wall beside a dressing table, all places where the viewer is an arm's length away rather than across a room. At that distance, detail matters more than impact: the fine barring in the feathers, the join where the black tip meets the pale beak, the odd scaled skin of the legs. Check those first.

Pink is not one colour. Images of this bird range from pale salmon through coral to a hot, almost fluorescent rose, and the difference decides where the piece can live. Warm walls, magnolia and beige will pull a salmon-toned bird towards muddiness, while cool white and pale grey let the pink stay clean. Deep teal and charcoal backgrounds handle the saturated end without any trouble.

The neck decides the format. A standing bird with that long S curve is an upright subject and looks cramped in a wide crop, whereas a group wading, or a bird with its wings out, spreads sideways and wants a landscape frame. A head-and-neck study is the exception and can go either way, provided there is space in front of the beak rather than behind it.

Tone is worth settling early. This subject sits on the line between elegant and kitsch, and both versions are legitimate. Botanical-style studies and quiet monochrome birds are calm enough for a bedroom. Sunglasses and cocktails belong in a bar area or a bright bathroom, and they should not pretend otherwise.

One last check: look at the eye. It is small, pale and set high on the head, and it is the first thing lost when an image has been over-processed or enlarged too far. If the eye is a soft blob, everything else in the picture is softer than it appears, and you will see that plainly from the short distance this subject usually gets viewed at.
