Flags bring saturated primaries and very little else — strong reds, deep blues, hard whites, occasional gold, arranged in blocks or bands with sharp edges between them. That palette is not negotiable, which makes this a subject you choose the room around rather than the other way round. It sits well against white, pale grey, natural wood and exposed brick, all of which give the colour somewhere to sit. It fights hard with sage, blush, mustard and most of the muted heritage shades, because those tones were mixed to avoid exactly this kind of intensity.
Weathered and distressed treatments change the arithmetic considerably. A faded, textured flag drops the saturation, brings in greys and rust tones, and behaves much more like a neutral. If your room cannot take full-strength primaries, the distressed version of the same flag will often work where the clean one will not. It also reads as older and less overtly declarative, which some people want and some people specifically do not.
Rippling versus flat is the other decision. A flag photographed mid-wave has folds, shadow and movement, and reads as an image of an object. A flat graphic rendering reads as pure design and holds a wall like a colour block. The rippling versions are more forgiving in a busy room; the flat ones are cleaner but demand space around them.
Garages, offices, dens and games rooms take these easily. Living rooms are trickier, mostly because a flag makes a statement about the owner that other subjects do not, and guests will read it. That is not a warning, just a fact worth acknowledging before you hang one where everyone sits.
Practical test before ordering: hold something in the flag's dominant colour up against the wall — a cushion, a book jacket, anything close. If that single colour looks wrong in the light of that room at the time of day you use it most, the whole piece will look wrong too, because a flag is essentially that colour at scale.
