Fashion drawing is a tall subject by nature. The figure is stretched deliberately, well beyond real human proportion, because the whole point is the fall of fabric down a long body. Put that in a wide frame and you either crop the thing the drawing was made to show, or you strand a thin figure in a field of empty paper. Portrait format is the default here, and for good reason.

Wide formats do have a use: a row of figures, a set of accessory studies, or a close crop of a face and hat. If you want horizontal, buy something composed horizontally rather than a single full-length figure floating sideways in a big frame.

Line quality is what to judge. Good fashion illustration is economical — a few confident strokes, a wash of colour, plenty of paper left alone. Weak examples overwork the face, shade every fold, and end up looking like a competent art-class exercise. From two metres away the confident version still reads; the overworked one turns muddy.

These suit dressing rooms, bedrooms, hallways and the narrow wall between two doors, which is exactly the awkward space most homes have going spare. They also stack well: two or three tall pieces in a column up a stairwell follow the diagonal of the stairs better than one wide piece ever will.

A caution on grouping. Drawings by different hands rarely hang together happily, because line weight and paper tone vary so much. If you want a set, keep to one visual family and one dominant accent colour, then hang them with tight, equal gaps — 10–15 cm reads as a deliberate group, while a wide scatter reads as leftovers arranged to fill a wall.
