The palette arrives with the subject and it is narrow: amber, rust, ochre, tobacco brown, and whatever grey the sky was doing that afternoon. That is a warm and slightly dusty range, and it sits down happily beside oak, walnut, leather, brass and walls painted in clay or mushroom tones. Where it struggles is a cool room — blue-grey paint, chrome, black-framed glass — because the orange has nothing to shake hands with and starts to look like a stain.
Saturation is the variable to check before buying. Real autumn contains a great deal of brown, bare wood and wet grey among the colour, and the better images admit it. Files pushed hard in editing glow in a way no woodland ever has, and that glow is exactly what stops being charming around the second week of living with it.
Structure is what lets one of these stay up all year. If the picture depends entirely on leaf colour, it will look stranded in May. If it also has bones — bare branches, a track curving into trees, mist stacking the wood into planes of grey — it reads as a landscape that happens to be autumnal, and nobody thinks about the season at all.
Rooms used after dark suit this subject better than bright daytime rooms. Warm lamplight pushes the ambers further and the picture gains depth in the evening, which is when dining rooms and sitting rooms do most of their work. In a white kitchen at midday the same image can look flat and merely orange.
A placement note worth using deliberately: warm colours appear to advance, so an autumn scene makes a wall feel nearer than it is. Hang one at the far end of a long corridor and it shortens the tunnel, which is usually an improvement. Hang the same picture along the length of an already narrow room and you will make it feel narrower still.
