Room light makes or breaks this subject. An eye study depends on a small bright catchlight sitting against a dark iris and darker lashes, and that relationship is fragile. On a wall washed with strong afternoon sun, the darks lift, the contrast collapses and the eye goes glassy and flat. In a dim corner the whole image sinks into shadow and the catchlight is all you can see. Even, indirect light — a wall at right angles to the window rather than facing it — is where this kind of picture behaves.

Gaze direction deserves a thought too. A large eye looking straight out is confrontational by design, which is effective in a hallway and wearing over a dining table where people sit for an hour. If you want the intensity without the pressure, choose a version glancing off to the side, or hang the direct one where you pass it rather than where you settle.

Palette is usually near monochrome with a single colour doing all the work in the iris. That makes it easy to place against plain walls and awkward against pattern, since the picture has almost no colour with which to argue back. It sits well with black metal, dark wood and grey plaster, and it can look clinical against pale blue.

Craft shows in the anatomy. The lower lid should have thickness rather than being a drawn line, lashes should vary in length and direction, and the catchlight should agree with the light falling across the rest of the skin. Symmetrical, evenly spaced lashes and a perfectly round highlight are the signs of an image assembled rather than observed.

Try it somewhere less prominent first if you can. A gaze that is striking for ten seconds in a shop is a different proposition above the sofa every evening. Hallways, landings and studies absorb that intensity easily; the room where you relax often does not.
