The usual mistake is buying an eclipse as a dark picture and hanging it like a bright one. Nearly the whole surface is near-black; a single ring, or one bitten crescent, carries every bit of interest. Put that where direct sun or a ceiling spot lands and the dark field turns into a mirror of the room, with the ring competing against your own reflection.

So the wall comes first. Even, indirect light — a side wall, a corridor, a wall opposite a window rather than beside it — keeps the black reading as black. Lamps aimed at the piece rarely help; they lift the shadow and flatten the contrast that makes an eclipse legible at all.

Scale is the second trap. Corona is a thin structure, and shrinking the image shrinks the only detail it has. If the bright edge is the width of a pencil line from where you stand, the whole thing reads as a dot on a dark rectangle. Better to go larger and let the black do what black does in a room: recede, and make the wall feel deeper than it is.

Pairing takes care. Eclipse images fight anything else that is high-contrast and circular, so keep them away from moon phase sets and large clocks. They sit well beside quiet, low-contrast company — a grey landscape, a soft abstract, plain framed text — where they are allowed to be the loud one.

Try a cheap test before deciding. Tape a sheet of dark paper to the wall you have in mind, stand where you normally sit, and look at it at three different times of day. If it is glaring back at you by mid-afternoon, that wall wants a lighter subject and the eclipse wants somewhere else.
