The difference between a good driftwood image and a forgettable one comes down to grain. Strong examples show the wood's history — the splits, the bleached silver surface, the way saltwater has scoured the soft rings away and left the hard ones standing proud. Weak ones photograph a pale lump of wood on a beach at midday, with flat light that hides exactly the texture you were buying it for.
Side light is what reveals that texture, so early or late sun, or an overcast sky with some direction in the cloud, gives far better results than bright noon. If you are comparing options, the useful check is whether the ridges are casting their own small shadows. Where they are not, the surface will read as smooth board once it is printed at size.
Colour range in this subject is deliberately narrow: bone, driftwood grey, sand, a little weathered brown. That is a strength if your room already has plenty going on, and a weakness if the wall is pale and the furniture around it is beige. Against a mid-tone or dark wall the piece gains edges and stops dissolving into its surroundings.
Orientation follows the wood. A single long spar or root wants a wide crop with space either side; a standing, twisted piece wants a tall one. Forcing a horizontal subject into a square usually means cropping off the ends, which is precisely where the broken fibres and interesting breaks tend to be.
Worth knowing before you commit: this subject is quiet by design and will not carry a large empty wall on its own. It performs best at eye level somewhere people pass close by — a hallway, beside a bath, along a landing — where the texture can actually be read.
Stand a metre back from the image on your screen at full size. If the surface still looks like plain smooth wood from there, choose a different one.
