Dinosaur Wall Art

Nobody views dinosaur art from across the room. It goes in bedrooms and playrooms, and the audience walks straight up to it, puts a finger on the claw and asks what that one is called. Such a short viewing distance is unforgiving: skin texture, the set of the teeth, the shape of the eye and whether the feet look like they carry any weight all get inspected at arm's length. An image that reads well as a thumbnail and dissolves into mush up close gets found out inside a week.

Accuracy has quietly moved on, and children notice. Feathered and fuzzy reconstructions, tails held clear of the ground, birdlike postures and far less of the old dragging-lizard silhouette are what current books and museum halls show. A piece drawn to the older conventions is not wrong as decoration, but it will be corrected by a six-year-old, which you may find charming and may not.

Tone deserves a decision before you buy. There is a real difference between a snarling head lunging at the viewer and an animal simply standing in a landscape, and the difference matters most in a room where somebody has to fall asleep. Bright cartoon treatments read as friendly and tie themselves to a particular style; muted, museum-ish earth tones stay calmer and outlast the phase.

Worth knowing about is the specimen approach: skeletons drawn as engravings, fossil layouts, or single species presented like botanical plates in ordered rows. These carry the subject without the theme-park voice, and an adult can happily keep one in a study long after the child has moved on to sharks, or space, or nothing in particular.

Hang it low. Adult eye level puts the picture above the head of the only person who really cares about it, and a dinosaur pitched at a standing grown-up loses most of its point. Set the height for the child now, and accept that you will move it up the wall in a few years' time.
