The first question people ask is whether it will make the room feel smaller. Usually not, and often the reverse. A dark image reads as depth rather than weight, so the wall it hangs on recedes slightly instead of closing in. What shrinks a room is clutter and poor lighting, not a dark rectangle. The real condition is that the surrounding wall has to be doing something: either pale enough to give the piece an edge, or deep enough in colour that the picture clearly belongs to it.

Glare is the practical problem nobody mentions until it is already on the wall. Dark surfaces behave like weak mirrors, so a window directly opposite will lay a bright rectangle across the middle of the image for a few hours each day. Walk the room before you choose the wall, at the times you actually use it, and note where the reflections land.

Weak examples in this category are simply underexposed. Everything sinks into an even sludge, tonal steps go blocky, and there is nothing for the eye to find. Good ones keep information in the shadows and give you one clear source of light — a moon, a lamp, a rim of sky — so the darkness has a shape. Zoom into the darkest area of the preview before buying; if it is a flat field of near-black there, it will be flat on your wall too.

Pairing needs restraint. Dark work anchors a group, so let it be the largest and let the others stay lighter and simpler. Two heavy dark pieces of equal size on the same wall tend to read as a gap in the room rather than a display.

Try one thing before committing: hold your phone showing the image against the wall in the evening, with the lamps you normally use switched on. Dark artwork is judged after sunset far more often than in daylight, and that is the test most people skip.
