A dandelion seed head is mostly empty space. Each seed sits on a thin stalk with a parachute of fine filaments at the end, and between them there is nothing but air. On a wall that translates into an image that is ninety per cent background, which is why these pieces feel calm at a distance and why they fail badly if the background is fussy.

Contrast does the work. The filaments are pale and almost translucent, so they only show against something darker or evenly lit — a deep charcoal, a soft grey, a backlit sky. Against a busy or mid-toned background they simply vanish, and you are left with a stem and a smudge. Look for clean separation between seed and ground before anything else.

Scale is worth thinking about early. Because so much of the frame is empty, a small piece can read as almost blank from across the room; a large one turns the sphere into architecture and the empty space into breathing room. Larger tends to suit this subject, provided the wall can take it without crowding the furniture.

Rooms that suit it are the still ones: bedrooms, bathrooms, a landing, the wall behind a bath or a bed. The subject carries an obvious association with wishes and letting go, which is either the reason you want it or the reason you do not. Neither position is wrong, but it is worth deciding before you hang it somewhere you sit every evening.

Before ordering, look at the image at thumbnail size on your phone. If the seed head still reads as a distinct sphere rather than a grey blur, the contrast is strong enough to survive a real wall in real light. If it blurs, it will blur worse from your sofa.
