The most common mistake with coastal art is buying the props instead of the place — anchors, lettered signs, arrangements of shells — and ending up with a room that looks like a seaside gift shop rather than the seaside. What actually makes a room feel coastal is what makes a coast feel coastal: horizon, big sky, water light and a washed-out palette. Buy the atmosphere, not the accessories.
Palette is the genuinely useful part, even hundreds of miles from any beach. Soft blues, sand, chalk white and driftwood grey calm a room without committing it to a theme, which is why a good seascape can hang in a city flat without a word of explanation. It is a palette, in other words, before it is a postcard.
Horizons want width. Panoramic and landscape formats suit this category better than almost any other, and they need enough size for the horizon line to read as distance rather than as a stripe. Hang the piece so that line sits near your standing eye level and the illusion of depth does most of the work for you.
Bathrooms and bedrooms are the natural homes — water imagery suits rooms built around rest and washing — but pale coastal pieces also rescue dim hallways, where the light they reflect is genuinely useful rather than merely decorative.
A filter worth applying before you buy: cover the title and ask whether the image is a good picture of light and water on its own terms. If it needs the word coastal to justify itself, it will need explaining on your wall too, and no picture should need explaining.
