Classic Fine Wall Art: Buying It Well

The common mistake is buying the image and ignoring its colour temperature. Old master style work carries centuries of warm varnish in it — ochre, umber, deep olive, a gold cast over everything — and people hang it in a cool grey-blue room under bright white bulbs, where it turns muddy and faintly sad. The painting has not changed; the light around it has.

Fix that first and most other questions get easier. Warm whites, cream, wood, brass and unbleached linen give this work the surround it was made for. If the room is committed to cool greys, choose examples with cooler underlying palettes — marble sculpture studies, monochrome engraving-style work, portraits on plain dark grounds — rather than fighting a golden interior scene you cannot win against.

Height is the second mistake. Traditional pictures get hung too high, usually because someone is centring them on the wall rather than on the eye. Centre the image roughly 145–150cm from the floor, which puts its middle at standing eye level, and let the furniture below sit wherever it happens to sit.

Quality in this category is mostly about detail surviving. A good reproduction keeps the brushwork legible and the dark passages open, so you can still see into a shadowed background. Weak ones have been sharpened until the craquelure looks like scratches, or lightened until the deep tones go flat grey. Look at the darkest area first; that is where corners get cut.

One honest caveat: this work does not mix easily with bold contemporary graphics on the same wall. It has slow, low contrast surfaces, and a modern high-contrast print beside it wins every time. Give it a wall of its own, or pair it only with other work of similar age and temperature.
