The gap between a strong Christmas angel and a weak one is nearly always restraint. Good examples earn their effect from one or two things done properly — the fall of a robe, the real weight of a wing, a single warm light source — and keep everything else quiet. Weak ones stack glitter, stars, ribbon, snowfall and a halo the size of a dinner plate until the eye has nowhere to rest. Check the face and hands before anything else. If they are vague while the sparkle is crisp, the picture was built around decoration rather than drawing.
Seasonal work carries a problem the rest of your walls do not: it is right for about six weeks and slightly odd for the other forty-six. That argues either for an angel quiet enough to survive out of season, or for accepting that it lives in storage and planning where it goes. A hallway or landing is far easier to swap than a wall that anchors a whole room.
Placement rewards a little thought. Mantels are the obvious spot and often the worst one, because the shelf fills with cards and greenery and the picture ends up peering over a hedge. A stair wall, the end of a hallway, or the space beside a doorway all give it clear air. Above a radiator or a working fire, hang higher than instinct suggests.
Colour splits this subject in two. Warm golds and creams sit happily with wood, brass and red; cool blue-white and silver angels want a greyer, cleaner room and look chilly against oak. Decide which half of the room you are answering to before you decide on the image.
One last check, because most people look at these by lamplight rather than daylight. Hold your phone at the intended spot in the evening, with the room at its usual dimness, and see how much detail survives. Anything that only reads in bright daylight will be a dark smudge on Christmas Eve.
