Chicago Wall Art: Reading the City Up Close

A city print gets looked at twice: once from across the room as you walk in, and once from about eighteen inches away by someone holding a drink and hunting for a building they recognise. Chicago images earn their keep on that second pass, because the skyline has landmarks people can name and a river that bends straight through the middle of the frame. Hang it where leaning in is possible — a hall, above a sideboard, the end wall of a kitchen — rather than high above a sofa where nobody can get near it.

Close inspection also sorts the good images from the ordinary ones. Look at the vertical edges of the towers: if they lean inward as they rise, the shot was taken looking up and never corrected, and once you have noticed that you will notice it daily. Look at the windows too. A strong image keeps lit floors and individual panes distinct instead of smearing them into a grey wash.

Weather does more for this subject than for most. The lake pushes flat silver light over the city for much of the year, and images made in it come out cool, restrained and easy to live with.

Sunset and blue hour give you the opposite: deep indigo sky, amber windows, a great deal of contrast. The first suits a room you work in and want to feel calm in. The second suits a room you use in the evening with the lamps already on.

Frame width follows the same logic. A wide panorama covers the whole lakefront run but shrinks every building in it, while a squarer crop of two or three towers gives you architecture rather than geography. Decide which of those you actually want before you measure the wall.

One test before ordering: find the building you care about most in the preview, then picture it at the size the canvas will be. If it lands smaller than a matchbox, choose the tighter crop instead.
