People stand closer to cat pictures than to almost anything else they hang. These end up in kitchens, hallways, home offices and beside beds — places you pass within arm's reach rather than view from a sofa — and that short viewing distance changes what to look for. Close up, detail is the whole game: the edge of a whisker, the change of texture where fur thickens at the ruff, the line where pupil meets iris. Something that works as a bold silhouette from across a hall can look coarse at half a metre.

Line work survives that inspection better than most treatments. A confident single-line drawing or a simple ink study holds together at every distance because there is nothing in it to fall apart; a heavily filtered photograph or an over-smoothed digital painting shows its seams the moment you are close enough to see them. If the piece is going somewhere you pass daily, favour the drawn over the processed.

Expression is the second thing close range exposes. Cats are easy to make twee, and the tell is usually the eyes: enlarged, glossy, aimed straight at the viewer. A cat looking away, half asleep or caught mid-stretch reads as an animal rather than a greetings card, and it stays likeable far longer.

Because they sit near eye level in narrow spaces, small formats do more work here than elsewhere. A pair or trio of modest pieces up a stair wall, or one square canvas above a desk, suits the subject better than a single large canvas over a fireplace, which asks the cat to carry an entire room.

One warning worth taking seriously: buying an image because it resembles your own cat rarely ends well unless it genuinely is a portrait of your cat. The likeness is never quite right, and the small wrongness is all you will see. Choose the picture you would want even if you had never owned an animal, and let the resemblance be a bonus.
