Low-contrast images are the most light-dependent things you can hang. A pale hazy composition that looks serene in bright afternoon daylight can flatten into a grey smudge in a north-facing room in February, and the same piece under a warm evening bulb turns faintly yellow. Before choosing, spend a moment noticing what your wall actually looks like at the two times of day you are most often in that room.
Rooms with plenty of daylight can take the palest work: soft neutrals, a barely-there horizon, gentle gradients. Darker rooms need calm images that still contain a real dark somewhere — a deep shadow, a charcoal line, one defined edge — otherwise the whole canvas sinks into the wall and stops registering as a picture at all.
Bulb temperature deserves a thought as well. Cool white bulbs keep blues and greys honest but make warm neutrals look slightly dirty, while warm bulbs flatter beige and cream and turn pale blue murky. You do not need to rearrange your lighting for a canvas, but if the room is already lit one way, choose a palette that agrees with it.
Placement matters differently here than with bolder subjects. Calm work does its job where you are still: opposite a bed, beside a bath, behind a reading chair, at eye level from a seated position rather than a standing one. Hung in a busy hallway it has nothing to do, because nobody stays put long enough to receive it.
A test that settles most decisions — view the image on your phone at the lowest brightness you would tolerate, standing in the actual room at the actual distance. If it still holds together, it will work there. If it disappears, you want something with more structure in it, not a bigger version of the same thing.
