The first question people ask about cactus prints is whether they only work in a bright, white, plant-filled room. They do not, but the reason matters. The palette is dusty green, sand, warm shadow and often a hard blue sky, and those tones need either strong daylight or a warm-toned wall to stay convincing. In a dark north-facing room against cool grey paint, the sand goes muddy and the green turns grey. Choose a high-contrast image with real black in the shadows and most of that problem disappears.

Second question, usually: which kind. A photographic desert scene is a landscape that happens to contain plants, and it behaves like one — it wants width, and it wants distance from the viewer. A single specimen against a plain ground is a graphic image and holds up small, in a kitchen or beside a door. Illustrated and line versions are the most forgiving of awkward wall colours, because there is less colour in them to argue with.

Shape does a lot of the work in this subject. Columnar species give you strong verticals, which suit narrow walls, chimney breasts and the gap beside a tall unit. Rounded and paddle forms are horizontal and casual. If a room feels squat, the columnar kind lifts it; if a room already feels tall and thin, they make it worse. Terracotta, raw wood, woven baskets and unglazed pottery belong to the same world and pair without effort. Chrome, glass and blue-grey soft furnishings sit awkwardly beside it. Should you want a pair or a trio, mix one wide desert view with one close specimen rather than lining up three plants of similar size, which reads as a garden centre catalogue.

One practical note on spines. The fine detail at the edge of a cactus is what makes the image feel real, and it is the first thing to vanish when a picture is viewed from too far away or reproduced softly. Zoom right into the plant's edge on the listing photograph. If the spines are a fuzz there, they will be a fuzz on the wall.
