Bulldog Wall Art: Wide or Tall

This animal is built horizontally, and the artwork should generally agree with it. A bulldog is wider than it is tall, low to the ground, heavy in the shoulder, and a tall portrait crop spends most of its height on empty background above the head. Landscape formats let the stance do the talking — the planted front legs, the barrel chest, the slight outward turn of the feet — and those proportions are the whole character of the breed.

The exception is the head-on face. A bulldog looking straight at the camera is essentially a square problem: the face is nearly as wide as it is deep in the frame, and a square or near-square crop gives the jowls room without stranding the composition in empty space. That version suits a narrow wall, a chimney breast or the gap between two windows.

Humour is the other thing to think about before shape. Comic treatments — sunglasses, waistcoats, cigars, boxing gloves — are common in this subject and they age at different speeds depending on how heavy-handed they are. A dog wearing a costume with a caption underneath is funny for a month. A dog with a genuinely expressive face and nothing added stays funny for years, because the joke is the animal rather than the prop.

Where wrinkles are involved, contrast and resolution matter more than usual. Weak examples smooth the folds into soft grey mush; good ones keep the shadow lines crisp, which is what makes the face read as a face from across a room rather than a pale blob. Look at the area around the muzzle and the brow before you decide.

Hanging tip that suits this subject specifically: put it low. These are heavy, grounded, unglamorous animals and they look right at seated eye level, above a bench, a boot room shelf or a low sideboard, rather than floating high on a wall where the eye has to reach up for them.
