Buddha Wall Art for the Right Room

This subject earns its keep in rooms where the pace already drops: a bedroom, a landing, a reading corner, a bathroom with soft daylight, the end wall of a space used for stretching or sitting quietly. It does badly wherever a television dominates or a kitchen runs at full volume, because stillness is the entire content of the image, and stillness cannot compete with a screen. Put it in a busy room and it stops being a subject at all, becoming something closer to wallpaper.

Treatment varies more than people expect. A weathered stone head reads as archaeology and sits well with concrete, linen and dark wood. Gold leaf and warm reds read as devotional and want a richer, darker setting around them. A single ink line drawing sits close to modern minimalism and suits a nearly empty room. Those three are not interchangeable, and most rooms have an appetite for only one of them.

Faces are where quality shows. Almost all the feeling lives in the mouth and the lowered eyelids, and a millimetre either way is the difference between serene and vacant. Look hard at that area before committing, especially on a tight crop, because at close range there is nothing else for the eye to occupy itself with.

Worth saying plainly: this is a religious figure, and for a great many people it is not decoration at all. Common courtesy among those who practise is that the image sits high rather than low, is not left propped on the floor or behind a shoe rack, and does not face a lavatory. None of that is hard to observe, and observing it costs you nothing whatsoever.

For placement, think about where you will be when you look at it. Since the figure is usually seated, hanging it to meet the eye line of a seated person — on a cushion, in a chair, on the edge of the bed — feels settled and companionable. Standing height makes you look up at it, which suits a shrine rather more than a sitting room.
