Slogans date fastest. Anything built around a witty line about coffee, wine or one more chapter has a shelf life of roughly eighteen months, after which you read it every morning and wince. What lasts in this category is the physical object: spines massed as colour, a stack seen edge on, worn cloth bindings, the fan of pages caught in light, a hand holding a book open. Those stay interesting because they are pictures of texture, not of a joke.

Typography is the borderline case. Lettering works when it is treated as shape rather than as message — a dense block of type gone soft and grey, a single ornate initial, an old title page where you cannot quite read the words. The test is whether the piece survives being unreadable. If the whole point is the sentence, the sentence had better be one you would happily have tattooed.

Colour is easier here than people expect. Book spines supply reds, ochres, faded blues and buff, all slightly desaturated by age, and that muted range sits comfortably against almost any wall colour and most timber. It is one of the few subjects that does not fight a dark green or a deep red room.

Placement rewards a little wit. A picture of books hung directly above real shelves is an odd sort of joke; the same piece in a hallway, a stairwell, a bedroom or a home office does its work far better. If you do want it in a reading room, put it on the wall opposite the shelves so the two are seen separately rather than compared.

Before ordering anything with words on it, say those words aloud twice. Text that reads as charming in a browser window often sounds smug in your own hall, and that reaction never improves with repetition. Pictures of books almost never have the problem, which is a decent argument for choosing them over a phrase.
