Register matters as much as ratio. Navy with mustard reads grown-up and settles into living rooms and studies; cobalt with lemon reads playful and belongs in kitchens, children's rooms and sunrooms. Decide which end of that scale your room sits on before falling for a piece from the other end.

Watch the yellow under your evening bulbs. Yellow shifts more than blue under warm light — a mustard can slide towards brown by lamplight — so look at the piece on your screen in the evening, in the room it is destined for, not only in daylight at your desk.

Pairing is straightforward: white walls, pale oak and grey upholstery all cooperate. The one caution is a room already full of orange-toned timber, where the wood and the yellow end up competing for the same job.

Before you buy, count the strong colours already in the room. Blue and yellow arriving together take two of your slots; if the room already runs three or more, something has to go, and it is cheaper to decide that now than after the canvas is up.
