Before you buy a minimalist black and white piece, study the wall you mean to hang it on. Work this restrained has nowhere to hide: a paint colour with yellow undertones will turn crisp whites dingy, and a patterned or heavily decorated wall will bury the single idea the composition is built around. Hold a sheet of plain printer paper against the surface in daylight; if the paper reads noticeably brighter than the wall, expect the white areas of the canvas to do the same, and lean towards compositions with softer, greyer contrast.
Once the wall passes, judge the composition itself, because there is no colour here to carry a weak one. A good minimalist piece has one clear subject — a single line, a geometric mass, a figure in generous negative space — and your eye should settle on it within a couple of seconds. If the eye keeps wandering, the piece is busy work pretending to be simple, and it will start to irritate you within a month.
Scale is the next trap. Minimalism reads as intentional when it is generous: a small print floating on a large empty wall looks like something you forgot to finish. As a rough rule, let the canvas fill about two thirds of the width of the furniture beneath it, or go noticeably oversized on an empty wall and let the negative space inside the artwork do the framing.
Pairing is the easy part. Black and white sits comfortably beside almost any palette, which is exactly why people choose it, but it rewards discipline nearby: one or two accent colours in the room, not five. It is happiest in modern, Scandinavian and japandi rooms, and surprisingly good above dark joinery.
The test worth doing before checkout: squint at the image until it blurs. If the composition still holds together as a shape, it will hold on your wall. If it dissolves into grey mush, keep looking.
