Illustration styles age at very different speeds, and it pays to know which end of the spectrum you are buying at. Anything tied to a current fad — this year's fashionable line weight, faces drawn the way everyone on social media is drawing them — tends to look tired within a few years. Loose figurative sketches, botanical studies, architectural line drawings and confident abstract mark-making have hung in good rooms for a century and show no sign of stopping. If you want a piece to survive a redecoration or two, buy the drawing, not the trend.

The advantage of monochrome illustration is that it argues with nothing. There is no colour to clash with your sofa, your rug or a future repaint, which makes this one of the few categories you can buy before the room is finished. What it contributes instead is texture and rhythm, so judge it the way you would judge handwriting: does the line look confident or hesitant? Assured, varied line weight reads as art; a uniform, timid line reads as clip art, and the difference is obvious even to people who could not say why.

Scale matters more here than with colourful work. Fine line work viewed from across a room collapses into pale grey, so either go larger than instinct suggests or hang the piece where people stand close — a hallway, a landing, above a desk, beside a mirror. Dense, high-contrast drawings hold up at distance far better than delicate ones do.

Grouping is where illustrations earn their keep. Three or five related drawings in a row give a corridor a gallery feel that a single colourful canvas rarely manages, and because the palette is shared, you can mix subjects freely without the wall looking random.

Before you commit, do the squint test on the listing image: screw your eyes up until the detail disappears. If a strong shape survives, the drawing will read across a room. If it dissolves into fog, treat it as a close-viewing piece and hang it somewhere people pass at arm's length.
