Take the colour out of an abstract and you find out quickly whether the composition was ever doing any work. That is the blunt reason black and white abstracts endure: with no palette to hide behind, everything rests on contrast, balance and line, and a piece that gets those three right reads as deliberate rather than decorative.
Everything goes with monochrome, runs the standard claim, and it is true in the least useful way. Because these pieces will not clash with your colours, you have to choose on character instead: a soft charcoal wash and a hard-edged geometric are both black and white, but one belongs in a bedroom and the other in a hallway or office. Decide what energy the room needs before you scroll.
Scale is where monochrome is generous. Without strong colour to overwhelm a room, you can go larger than instinct suggests, and you usually should — one big piece almost always beats a scatter of small ones, because the impact of this category is graphic rather than intricate.
Light matters less here than with colour, with one exception: dim corners eat mid-greys. If the wall you have in mind is far from a window, favour pieces with strong contrast over subtle tonal work, which will flatten to grey mush by evening.
The mistake to avoid is temperature. Pure white in artwork against warm ivory walls makes the paintwork look yellowed and the canvas look stark; check whether your whites lean warm or cool, and pick artwork that leans the same way.
A quick test before you commit: shrink the image to thumbnail size on your screen. A composition that still reads clearly at postage-stamp scale will read across a room; one that turns to static will hang there as texture, which may be fine, but you should choose it knowingly.
