This subject punishes small. The entire appeal is bulk — a head that weighs more than a person, a shoulder hump that blocks the horizon — and shrinking that down to a modest rectangle beside a bookcase throws away the only thing the animal is offering. As a rough rule, if the printed animal ends up smaller than the head of someone standing in front of it, the image is working against itself. Go up a size from your instinct, then check the wall can take it.
Weather is the other half of the effect. The best examples put the animal in something: blown snow, dust catching low sun, breath condensing in cold air, grass bent flat by wind. Take that atmosphere away and you have livestock in a field. When comparing two similar images, favour whichever one tells you what the air was doing that day.
Orientation splits cleanly by distance. A close head-on portrait wants an upright frame, because the animal's mass runs vertically from horn to chest. A herd crossing open ground wants a wide one, so the emptiness on either side can do its job. Forcing a herd into a tall frame leaves you with a lot of sky and a small brown smudge. Colour, thankfully, is easy: brown, ochre, dust, bone, occasionally deep snow blue. That range sits naturally with leather, oak, wool and clay-coloured paint, and slightly awkwardly with cool white minimalism, where the animal can look as though it was airlifted in.
Leave real breathing room above and beside it when you hang. A large animal image crowded up against a ceiling line or a shelf edge loses its scale immediately, because the eye reads the gap around the frame as part of the picture whether you intend it to or not.
