Worth saying before you commit: this is one of the most reproduced plants in interiors, and a mediocre version of it looks like the picture that came with the rental. What rescues the good ones is that the plant is genuinely awkward — paddle leaves that split along their ribs as they age, stems that lean rather than stand to attention — so an image keeping the tears and the lean reads as observed, while a flawless glossy leaf reads as clip art.

Scale is the next decision, and it follows from the plant itself. The real thing is head height or taller, and a small print loses exactly what makes it interesting. On a narrow stretch of wall between a door and a corner, a tall crop of two or three leaves does far more than the whole plant shrunk to postcard proportions.

Colour is where these fail quietly. The foliage sits in a deep blue-green, and prints pushed for saturation land somewhere near emerald, which then argues with every warm wood and cream wall in the room. Hold the image up in the light you actually have, at the time of day you are usually in that room. If the green is not a colour you would put on a wall, it will not settle on canvas either.

Pairing is easier here than with most botanical subjects because the silhouette is so distinct. One of these carries a wall alone, or sits beside a plain abstract in sand or clay without competing. Two large leaf prints hung side by side tend to cancel each other out; the eye reads them as wallpaper rather than as two pictures.

A closing caveat about placement. This subject does its best work where a real plant would sulk — a dim hallway, a windowless landing, the turn of a stair. Hang it in the corner where you already keep three healthy specimens and it starts to look like a theme rather than a choice. The room with no greenery at all is the one where it earns its keep.
