Birch is one of the easiest subjects to hang next to other things, and that is most of the reason people buy it. The image is vertical stripes of white, grey and black with at most a wash of green or gold, which makes it very nearly a neutral. It will sit beside a family photograph, a map, a piece of abstract colour or a mirror without arguing with any of them, having no strong colour of its own to defend.

That makes it the useful anchor in a mixed gallery wall. Put it at one end of a run of frames and it quietens everything without going blank, the way a plain cushion earns its place on a patterned sofa. It also gives a busy arrangement a vertical rhythm, which stops a long row of rectangles reading as a queue.

The trap is repetition. Two birch pieces side by side stop being pictures and start being wallpaper, because the stripes carry on across the gap and the eye reads one pattern rather than two images. One per wall is the sensible limit, and if you want a pair, make the second something with a horizontal emphasis.

Orientation follows the trunks. Tall narrow formats echo the growth and suit chimney breasts, the space beside a tall doorway, or a stair wall. Wide formats change the subject entirely: snowy woodland in landscape is a picture of a place, with depth and distance in it, rather than a pattern of verticals, and it wants the wall behind a sofa or a bed.

If your walls are white or close to it, choose a version with a dark ground between the trunks — woodland shadow, dusk, deep green — or the print will sink into the plaster and the only thing marking its presence will be its edge. Pale on pale is a lovely thing in a magazine photograph and an invisible thing in an actual hallway.
