Beauty Wall Art

This is dressing-room art before it is living-room art. Beauty imagery — close-cropped faces, lips, lashes, make-up brushes, a hand and a compact — belongs where people get ready: a bedroom corner, a dressing area, a bathroom wall away from the shower spray, a salon. It is much harder in a kitchen or family living room, where a large human face at close crop tends to dominate every conversation happening beneath it.

Crop size is the variable that decides all of this. A full figure reads as fashion illustration and is easy to live with. A face cropped tight at the eyes and mouth is intense and needs either distance or a private room. If you like the subject but not the intensity, look for images where the face is turned away, partly hidden, or reduced to a graphic outline.

Palette in this category runs to blush, nude, taupe, gold and black, which is narrow and forgiving. It pairs neatly with warm metals and pale wood, and fights with anything strongly green or navy. Two or three prints from the same palette hung in a column beside a mirror is the arrangement that most often looks right.

Skin tone deserves proper checking on screen. Reproduction of skin is unforgiving — a slight green or magenta cast is far more obvious on a face than on a flower — so view the image at full size before committing, paying attention to the shadows under the jaw and around the eyes.

One last thing about mirrors. If the piece will hang near one, stand where you normally do your make-up and check the reflection. Art that looks calm on the wall can be busy and distracting behind your own face, and the whole point of hanging it there is that you will be looking past it for several minutes every morning.
