Pairing is the whole game with this subject, because autumn arrives as orange, rust and ochre, and those are opinionated colours. They sit comfortably beside black and white photography, botanical line drawings, warm timber and anything else in the earth range. They fight with lilac, cold pink, icy blue and most grey-blue neutrals. In a grouped arrangement, let the boldest autumn image be the anchor and keep everything hanging near it quieter, ideally monochrome.
An honest caveat about the season itself. A blazing gold woodland reads as October and starts to feel out of step by the following May, which is fine if you rotate pictures and a nuisance if you do not. The versions that live happily all year are the muted ones: brown, olive and grey doing most of the work, with gold appearing in a few places rather than everywhere.
Weak examples are uniformly warm. Every leaf, trunk and patch of ground the same toasted orange, nothing left to push against it, and the picture flattens into a single sheet of colour. Good ones keep a cold note somewhere — a wet black trunk, grey sky through the canopy, a blue shadow across the path — and that one cool element is what makes the warmth register as warmth.
Bulbs matter here more than in most categories. Under a warm lamp these colours deepen and glow; under a cool white LED the same print goes brown and slightly dirty, and people blame the picture rather than the fitting. If the room runs on cool daylight bulbs, choose an image with real contrast rather than a soft golden haze.
Test it against the coldest thing in the room. Find the grey cushion, the steel lamp base or the blue-toned rug, and picture the print beside that specifically, because that is the pairing that will fail first. If it survives the coldest object in the room, everything warmer will take care of itself.
