Work out how close people will actually stand before you choose, because Australian subjects split into two kinds and the split matters. A red desert road or an empty stretch of coast reads from across a room and gains little from close inspection. A reef study, a crop of banksia, or an aerial of salt pans is the opposite: the interest lives in the detail, and it wants a wall people pass within a pace of. Hang the second kind high above a sofa where nobody stands and most of what you bought goes unseen.

Colour is the next thing to settle. This palette leans hot — ochre, rust, bleached bone, the particular grey-green of eucalypt foliage — and it runs warm against cool grey walls and cool-toned oak. It sits easily beside cream, clay, terracotta and unpainted timber. In a strongly blue-grey room, either commit to the contrast or choose a coastal image instead, where turquoise and white carry the picture and the warmth stays down in the sand.

Aerials are the ones people most often size wrongly. Flattened patterns of tidal flats and salt lakes lose their subject when printed small, and from a distance they read as wallpaper. Give them width. Ground-level landscapes with a horizon are more forgiving, though they still want to hang low enough that the horizon line sits at or just below standing eye level.

Weak examples usually fail in the sky. The light here is harsh and high-contrast, and an image pushed too far in processing shows it at the top first — a blown white band along the horizon, or a purple cast where the blue has been dragged. Check the upper third before anything else.

One test before you commit: stand where you will normally stand and view the image on a phone held at roughly the size it will occupy from there. If it still reads clearly, the composition is strong enough for that wall. If you catch yourself zooming in, you have picked a detail image for a distance wall.
