The defining feature is the line: one long unbroken curve that starts as a stem, becomes a woman's hair and ends as a border. That contour is drawn heavier than anything else in the image, which means the style reads clearly from across a room while the flat colour inside the outlines stays quiet. It is one of the few decorative traditions that works at distance and still rewards a close look, and that double behaviour should decide where you put it.

Colour here leans to muted gold, sage, dusty rose, ochre and deep teal — pigments that sat well against the wallpapers and stained glass of the period. Against a brilliant white modern wall those tones can look slightly drained. A warm off-white, a clay or a soft grey-green wall gives them the depth they were designed for, and if repainting is not on the table, a warm bulb rather than a cool one does much of the same work.

Format matters more here than in most categories. Work in this style began as posters and decorative panels, so tall narrow proportions are native to it and a portrait canvas will usually look more convincing than a wide one. Pairing is where people go wrong. Two ornate panels either side of a mirror tips quickly into pastiche. Better results come from one strong piece surrounded by plain surfaces — simple frames, an unfussy lamp, bare wall — so the ornament reads as a deliberate choice rather than a theme applied to the room.

Before buying, look hard at the linework in the largest preview you can get. Weak examples go soft where curves meet and the outline thins into mush. Strong ones hold an even, confident weight the whole way round, and that steadiness is what survives being seen every single day.
